Basic training wasn't too bad. You were already pretty fit and could handle yourself pretty well, but the other guys often looked down on you and Steve, mostly Steve. Whenever they were rude to Steve you were ready to hand them there asses, but he always talked you out of it.

As you were doing push-ups, Carter was trying to motivate the group by calling them girls and what not. You always rolled your eyes whenever she did. As you switched to jumping jacks, you could see the doctor and the colonel over to the side nearby. All of a sudden the colonel threw something onto the ground by the group and shouted. "Grenade!"

As everyone else scrambled behind something, Steve lunged forward and threw himself on top of the grenade. You yelled out to him and stopped running for cover. As the grenade was declared a dummy, Steve sat up. "...Is this a test?"

You walked up to Steve, glaring at him and helped him up. "Steve, you asshole."

"What?"

"I can't believe you would do that." You then sighed and put your hand on your forehead. "Wait, yes I can."

Steve tried laughing to get you to calm down and the group got back to training.

At the end of the week, you were set to be shipped off to the front lines. Steve on the other hand had a procedure he was going to go through. As you were ready to leave, you turned to Steve. "Whatever that doctor does to you, just promise you'll stay alive during the war."

"Shouldn't I tell you that, seeing as your going there now."

"Maybe, but I'll make it. I always do." You smiled at him and then hugged him. "Stay safe Steve."

"You too."

With that you were gone. Shipped off to the front lines and ready for war. After a few months you were eventually transferred into the 107th. When Bucky found out you were there, he greeted you with a hug. "No fucking way."

"I know, right?" You hugged back, and then looked at him once you had separated.

"You got in. You never wanted to get in." He took it in and then his face dropped. "No...does that mean...?"

You nodded, as you picked up on what he was meaning. "Yeah...Steve and I both got in the night of the Fair. He was picked to be a part of some project, and I haven't seen him since."

Bucky sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "Let's just hope he isn't sent out here." You nodded in agreement.

---

It had been almost a year since you had joined the army. The 107th had been captured by Hydra and forced to work on missiles. You were currently strapped down to a table, your head swimming. You had contracted pneumonia, like so many others had before you, and were taken to an isolation clinic. As your eyes started to open, you came face to face with the main Hydra Doctor, Zola.

"Well, Miss [l/n]...I'm not sure how you hid your gender for so long, but now that we know, we have taken off your bindings. It should prove to be more comfortable during your stay."

Your eyes widened at this, as much as they could. You looked down at yourself as best you could, and there they were. Your breasts free from your bindings under your shirt. Looking over slightly, you saw your bindings on the counter. You groaned and rolled your head back.

"Well since you are here, I have some experiments I am going to be using on you." He turned to the counter and pulled out a large syringe. "Not many have survived these yet, but with the alterations I have implemented, you just might."

Then the needle was plunged into your vein, the contents being pushed into your system. It felt like fire, searing its way through your veins. Luckily you passed out shortly into it.

No matter what state of consciousness you were in when the needles were stuck in you, you were forced awake by the pain to experience it, and then passed out. Today, your eyes opened, and there was no one around. You rolled your head back onto the table and pulled against the restraints holding you down. You were drained from all the chemicals in your body, but you weren't dead, and you wanted to keep it that way.

Then you heard gunshots, explosions, and just all around chaos. Something was going down, and you needed to get out of here. You were more alert now, as you struggled against your confines. As the noises got louder, you could feel the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. There was an energy, like a strong heat, building up in your arms and legs. Your muscles twitched and convulsed, and at the peak of this build up you closed your eyes and felt the energy release from your body.

As you opened your eyes, you noticed that you were free from your constraints. You also took note of the fact that everything in the room that was flammable, was now on fire. Shit, so we're your clothes, patting those off you wondered what happened, noting that you forearms and feet were coated in something black like charcoal. You couldn't think about that long though, as the explosions going off got louder and shook the building. You got up, and tried running out of the room, stumbling into the hall. As you gained your balance, you looked down the hall and noticed two figures, approaching you. Was that? "B-Bucky...!?" As they got closer, you hugged Bucky. Then looking at the other man your eyes widened, and you hugged him. "Steve! What the hell happened to you?!"

They both looked at you confused, and then you looked down at yourself. "...[b/n]?" Steve questioned.

Fuck, your bindings had burned up. This is not how you wanted this to happen. "I...I can explain-!" An explosion cut you off.

"Later! We need to go!" Steve shouted.

---

As the group of recovered soldiers walked back to camp, many a times you were asked if you needed someone's jacket. This was because the air being rather cold, your clothes partially burnt, and no shoes, but you were honestly not cold. It was bizarre, but you practically felt like it was a summer day, despite the dreary conditions.

Finally, back at camp everyone celebrated the fact that so many people had returned. As the group approached the center of camp, Colonel Phillips and Agent Carter stood ready to greet them.

"You're late." Carter commented to Steve.

He pulled a device out of his pocket, broken and mangled. "Couldn't call my ride."

Bracing yourself for the punishment you were bound to receive for lying, you pushed past people, and walked towards the colonel and Agent Carter. Once they notice you they went a little wide eyed.

"How the hell did you sneak in." Phillips inquired.

You bowed your head slightly, understanding his anger. "I... Dr. Erskine let me in. He knew..." You looked up and looked him in the eye. Wringing your hands together, you knew you needed to tell them about what happened at the hydra facility. "Sir...I understand I deserve punishment, but I need help. Hydra...they did something to me. I-I don't know how to explain it, but I... I can show you."

Everyone just sort of looked at you, as you stood there. "Well, show us then." Carter spoke up.

You had everyone back up, as the last time you did this you destroyed everything in a room. You closed your eyes trying to get that same sort of build up of energy in your arms again. After a bit you opened an eye and saw that nothing had happened. Looking at your hands, you tired figuring out how to get this to happen. "Clearly nothing is happening. Someone arrest her." Phillips said.

As they started to get closer, you felt the hair on the back of your neck stand up. "No! Stay back! There is something wrong with me!!!" And as you flung your arms out in frustration, they became engulfed in flames. After looking at your forearms, you looked up at Agent Carter and Colonel Phillips. "This...this is what they did to me..."

Phillips sighed, "...Fine, someone get her to Stark."

---

It would be a bit before they could get you to Stark, so for the meantime they just quarantined you. You sat and sighed, everything had gone to shit so quickly. Your tent then opened, and in walked Steve and Bucky. Your had trouble forcing yourself to look either of them in the eyes.

"When did you plan on telling us?" Steve asked calmly.

"I..." You wrung your hands together. "Honestly, probably never."

"Why did you do it? Why dress up as a man?" Bucky chimed in.

You could feel tears sting your eyes. You had thought about telling them before. Letting them know you weren't really a male, it never worked out well in your mind. It seemed to be going the same way now. "I began dressing as a man so I could find work when I was young. Then as I got older, I realized that men have it easier."

Neither of them said anything in response to that. They just stood there for a bit, silently, mulling over your response. Then they went to leave, Bucky stayed behind for just a moment, looking back at you, and then left.

---

"Well, you seem to be stable now." Stark commented as he examined your arms. He could see the forlorn look on your face and turned to Carter. "Hey, Peggy, you're going out tonight, right?"

Peggy cocked an eyebrow. "Yes, why?"

"Well, she seems stable, and she isn't going to be leaving here for probably a while. Why don't you take her with you, get one last taste of freedom."

"Howard I don't kno-"

"If anything happens, I'll take responsibility. Just let her breath some fresh air, maybe have a drink, and then bring her back." Howard pleaded with her.

You were confused as to why he was doing this. You had never met this man before, yet here he was trying to help you, in a way. Peggy sighed and agreed. "Fine, but you owe me Stark."

"Of course!" He patted her shoulder, and then turned to you. "You're going to need some better clothes than that if you're going out. I may just have something that will fit you." He smiled at you.

---

"Agent Carter-"

"Peggy, [f/n]. You can call me Peggy." She interrupted you as the two of you walked down the street together.

"Peggy... I don't know if I should go in..." You continued your sentence that had been cut off.

"Why not?"

You swallowed and looked at yourself in the window. "Because...what if I get too worked up and start a fire..."

She put her hand on your shoulder, and looked at you. "Well try not to, but I have a feeling that's not what you're worried about..."

You looked away, a blush dusting your cheeks. When you looked back in the window you really looked at yourself, taking it all in. You can't believe Stark just had a dress (assets.unique-vintage.com/medi… ) lying around like that, and that Agent Cart- Peggy would do your makeup. You practically looked like another person. "I'll come in in a moment. I just... Need to collect myself."

She nodded and made her way inside. You could hear the sound of everyone being loud stop, probably as they noticed Peggy. As you heard the noise begin to start back up, you decided to make you way in. This was a mistake. You should have just gone in with Peggy, as literally everyone stopped making noise now, and instead opted to look at you. You couldn't blame them though, you had, only a few days before hand, been seen as a male and yet here you were in a fancy dress and makeup.

You nodded to those who you made eye contact with as you made your way through, trying to get to Peggy without incident. As you got to Peggy, you looked up and noticed Steve and Bucky. This was the worst. "What are you doing here?" Steve asked, an undertone of hostility in his voice, at least you thought there was.

"Howard asked me to take her out, as tonight is likely the last night in a long time she can go out." Peggy responded. Steve gave a nod and turned back to Peggy, and you made eye contact with Bucky. You took the few steps over to him, since Steve and Peggy began talking.

"...So...I never got your name. Your real name." Bucky said, leaning against the bar.

You leaned against the bar as well. "It's [f/n]." You looked into his eyes.

"So, is the gender and the name the only things you lied about?"

"Well the first name, but yeah that was it. I always stayed truthful to you guys... I mean you were my friends, I wasn't gonna lie to you." You gave a slight chuckle. "Of course, besides those two things."

Bucky smiled at you. "You know, you do make a lovely dame. I can't believe I never saw it sooner."

You let out a laugh, and smiled warmly at him. "Thanks, but no thanks Barnes."

"What? I make a wonderful date, I will have you know." He mocked offense.

"I've seen you with dates, I'm not ready for that."

Bucky chuckled. "Yeah, that and I'm fairly certain I remember a number of times when you had told Steve that if you were a dame, you would date him."

Your jaw dropped and your face flared up with blush. "B-Bucky! Shut up!"

He genuinely laughed and patted you on the shoulder. "I'm just yanking your chain." Still blushing, you stuck your lips out in a pout and looked away from him. "All joking aside, you do look nice...[f/n]."

You looked back at him and gave a shy smile. "Thank you, Bucky." You rubbed the back of your neck. "I honestly never expected to wear a dress again in my life. Let alone something this nice."

"Where did you get a dress in such short notice, anyways?"

"Howard Stark."

He gave you a confused look before you were tapped on the shoulder. Looking back, it was Peggy. "Speaking of Stark, we should probably get going now."

"Ah, ok. Thanks for talking with me, Bucky. I'll see you soon." You gave a wave and went to leave when he pulled you into a light hug. You were in shock for a moment, but then put you rested your chin on his shoulder. You were so afraid that he and Steve would hate you, and just this act of kindness helped make you feel less alone.

When he pulled away he notice the tears on your face, and he wiped them off. "Geez, and here I thought you were a soldier."

You laughed and knocked his hand away. "Yeah, sorry. It's probably just because of the stuff Hydra did to me."

"Oh, yes. Of course." He chuckled watched as you left with Peggy.

You turned back one more time and waved at him and Steve before leaving. Once you got outside you and Peggy walked back the way you came. "So, that was quite the scene in there, [f/n]." Peggy commented.

"W-what?" You looked at her shocked and confused. "What do you mean?"

"A lovely lady such as yourself, showing so much affection towards two soldiers. I'm sure the others are rather jealous." She gave a small smirk towards you.

"Two? I was only talking to Bucky."

"You two weren't as quiet as you might have thought. You should have seen Steve's cheeks turn pink at the mention of how you had said you would date him in the past."

Your face was redder than it had been previously been at any point tonight. "Th-that was in the past." You looked to the side, not wanting to meet her gaze. "Plus, I'm sure people just thought I was an oddity more than anything. I used to be a soldier, now I'm a lady in dress."

"A beautiful lady in a dress. They didn't stare at you because you're an oddity, they stared because you are beautiful."

You looked back at her, finally meeting her gaze, and smiled. "Thank you...Peggy."
Yay, reader got her powers! And is outed as a woman... Also lots of Bucky/reader relationship >_>

Im currently in the process of deciding how the next chapter should be laid out. So just gonna see what you want!
a) keep doing the memories up to the ice nap
or b) go back to present and then come back to memories
